In Training

When our son, Alex, was in junior high he came up with the phrase “Character Building Experiences.” Whenever things were not going right and he would find himself in a ridiculously frustrating situation that was out of his control, he would refer to it as a “CBE”. It was never something he could laugh about, but it was amazing that he had the perspective to see it for what it was.
Today he reminded me that a CBE wasn’t always a bad thing. It was simply an experience that pushed him out of his comfort zone, and reminded him that man plans, God laughs…and we adjust. It makes us who we are, and gives us our own unique story.

Whatever you choose to call these moments, they provide clarity and opportunity for us to put our eyes on the Lord and see what He would have us do. Personal victory and growth comes as we obey and make any necessary series of adjustments and changes he directs. God will instruct us and provide us the training we need to live a life of excellence. We would be wise to seek His counsel as we try to walk in the footsteps of Jesus.

I love this Bible passage that reminds us exactly what we’re in training for!

“Every athlete in training submits to strict discipline, in order to be crowned with a wreath that will not last; but we do it for one that will last for ever. That is why I run straight for the finishing line; that is why I am like a boxer who does not waste his punches. I harden my body with blows and bring it under complete control, to keep myself from being disqualified…” 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 GNB
